In October of 1910, only four years before the outbreak of World War I, nobody knew whether planes, dirigibles, or balloons would prevail. Within a period of 17 days, this question was on prime display, as the dirigible America tried to cross the Atlantic; huge crowds gathered at horse-racing tracks to watch airplanes race around overhead; and ballooning teams from around the world took off from St. Louis in pursuit of the Bennett International Balloon Cup, given to the balloon that traveled the farthest. The dramatic denouement would stun the country and lay the foundation for the air force. In Chasing Icarus, Gavin Mortimer has plumbed original and primary sources to paint a vivid picture of the launching point of flight, and an indelible portrait of the late-Edwardian world about to explode into war.

I'm an aviation buff, but I think anyone with an interest in turn of the century American history will find this book fascinating. The view into the early days of aviation is tremendously exciting, showing how each of the three disciplines covered - airplanes, balloons and dirigibles - were very much in a state of rapid development, with daring young men (and women!) seeking to push forward the boundaries of the possible.

They were heady times, to be sure, filled with great danger, bitter rivalries and huge opportunities. The author does a wonderful job of really fleshing out each of the main characters and the skipping back and forth between the simultaneous stories - and eventually, showing how they all come together - is very well done. This is an excellent example of popular history done right. I couldn't put it down!

Anybody with a curiosity, a love, a reverence for history, in this case aviation history, should get a tingle out of this book. Mr. Mortimer puts you in the world of 1910, the culture and the moment, with a steady reporter's gaze that doesn't lack a visitor's wonder at it all. The people are the story here, the new machines, the dangers, the bravery & tragedies- these are icing on the cake.

I wish cinema could do as well with these stories. It had been recommended to me by the excellent NPS interpreter at Kill Devil Hills (not Kitty Hawk) N.C. where Wilbur & Orville first flew, and I am glad he told me about it.
Interesting book but somehow I never was really taken by the story. I learned about aviation in that era and that was good but I wish it had entertained me more.
Many stories told here in this book, about the true acts of trials in aviation. The people involved were the movers and shakers of the day. The airplanes were just flyable at best. Without the determination of the designers and pilots who flew these contraptions we as a people would not be were we are today in aviation. I have enjoyed this book so much and will probably read it again. Another great book. Thanks. Sincerely, Rick L.
interesting history not generally known
Great research
This book and others helped me asssemble an exhibit about history of flight at a museum, great reference!
